This site features the medieval town of Noia (also spelt as Noya) and the region of Galicia, both situated on the north west coast of Spain, just above Portugal.
Other places of interest close to Noia are also described. These include the historic city of Santiago de Compostela and the towns of Padron (the home of Rosalia de Castro) and Muros, with its working harbour, plus the beaches (or playa) of Testal and Queiruga. In summary, Noia is a former port town on the Atlantic facing west coast of Galicia in Spain. Noia, has evolved over recent years and now enjoys significant summer tourism between the months of May and September. six or seven years ago English speaking tourists were few in Galicia, but today many of the waiters and bar staff in Galicia speak some English and many are taking lessons - an indication of this region's expectations of mass foriegn tourism in the future.
August is a national holiday in many parts of Spain and a large nummber of visitors, 6 million to be precise, spend some part of that time in Galicia and other northern territories - Noia is a place many of them choose to visit at some point.
The region of Galicia is not typical of the rest of Spain. It has green scenery, over 400 beaches and a four season climate that includes a cold winter. The Galicians also speak their own language (gallego) and have their own cuisine based around fresh locally caught seafood and shellfish.
Noia itself has a popluation of around 18 000 people and is 34 km from the major Galician city of Santiago de Compostela. Both in the la Coruna province of the region.
Some 25 minutes down the coast from Noia is another seaside town called Muros and both Noia and Muros are located in the same bay or "ria".
